Tasked with a project for the Inter-American Development Bank, Dr. Mazariegos embraced the challenge of developing an effective, ecological, and cost-efficient method for water purification.This necessity arose from the widespread lack of access to potable water in many regions of Guatemala, particularly in rural households. The challenge was too significant to be addressed solely through charitable donations.

After extensive research and the creation of numerous prototypes, Ecofiltro was born—a water filtration system crafted from 100% natural materials, embodying the original goals of efficacy, sustainability, and affordability.

In 2025, the establishment of Ecofiltro Saudi Arabia facilitated the introduction of this technology into a growing market, expanding its reach into new territories and amplifying efforts to address the global environmental crisis.

Thanks to its user-friendly design and outstanding performance, Ecofiltro quickly gained popularity, prompting the company’s transformation into a socially responsible organization. Ecofiltro’s primary objectives are to enhance public health and improve the quality of life by providing access to clean water while combating environmental plastic pollution.

In 2012, Ecofiltro S.A. inaugurated a state-of-the-art factory near Antigua, Guatemala, with a production capacity of 8,000 to 10,000 filters per month.
